Watching Wilk. Something Regal Grow – A Journey to Foalhood
There’s a special kind of excitement in the barn these days — our five-month-along Shetland mare, Wilk. Something Regal, is carrying her foal! She was bred on June 3, 2025, and if all goes as nature intends, we’ll be welcoming a new arrival around late April to early May 2026.
While Regal still looks much like her usual sweet self, there’s a whole lot happening inside that little belly of hers.
Month Five — A Tiny Miracle Taking Shape
Right now, Regal’s foal is about the size of a small kitten — roughly 6 to 8 inches long and weighing around a pound. Though small, this foal already looks like a perfectly formed miniature horse! The muzzle is starting to show fine hairs, and the mane and tail are beginning to grow.
From this point on, the foal’s bones and muscles will strengthen and fill out. The real growth spurt will come later, during the last three months of pregnancy, when most of the foal’s weight is gained.
Caring for a Growing Mama
Even though Regal’s belly hasn’t changed much yet, her needs are beginning to. During mid-pregnancy, it’s important to:
- Maintain good body condition. Not too fat, not too thin. Quality hay, clean water, and a trace-mineral salt block go a long way.
- Stay current on vaccinations and deworming. Check with your vet for what’s safe and recommended for pregnant mares.
- Provide regular movement. Turnout and light exercise help her digestion and muscle tone.
- Watch her temperament. Hormones can make some mares a little moody or protective — just part of the process.
🌸 Closing Thought
It’s amazing to think that inside this bright young mare, a new life about the size of a kitten is already stretching, growing, and preparing to meet the world. Watching Wilk. Something Regal transform from a lively filly into a soon-to-be mother is a reminder of just how much wonder is tucked into every corner of the farm.
Stay tuned — we’ll share updates as her journey continues, one precious month at a time.
